"Hey, Real Quick!" The Hidden Cost of the Workaround
There’s a phrase that quietly reshapes organizations over time:
"Hey, real quick..."
Sounds harmless enough, right?
A quick answer. 🔎
A quick approval. 👍
A quick favor because someone’s out,
someone’s busy,
or a customer needs something now. 🍟
And in the moment? It feels efficient. Helpful, even.
That’s the danger.
Because most organizations don’t lose structure through rebellion. They lose it through workarounds.
One “real quick” at a time.
The Shortcut That Feels Smart
You’ve seen this happen, haven't you? Someone needs an answer, but instead of going through the proper channel, they route around it:
“Hey, real quick — can you answer this for me?”
Or worse: They ask three different people at once and take whichever answer comes back first... or sounds best — we'll have to talk about playing "mom" against "dad" sometime soon.
(Yeah... not feeling so special NOW, are ya?)
And honestly? From their perspective, it makes perfect sense.

Metrics looming.. 📊
Reality is, their incentives often are built to [more obviously] reward speed over structure. So of course they optimize for quick turnarounds.
And if the shortcut works? The behavior gets reinforced immediately. Because of course it would. (Ever hear of Pavlov's dogs? Same thing.)
The Reward Loop Nobody Notices
Here’s where things start getting slippery.
Like I said... sometimes, the workaround... produces a "win." DING DING!
Customer satisfied 😁
Deal moves forward 🔔
Problem solved 🔍
Cash flow protected 📈
Leadership sees the outcome and thinks:
“Great initiative.”
Meanwhile, the actual operating system just took another small hit. But... nobody notices because the organization still functions.
That’s the trap: You don’t see the bleed.
Not right away, at least..
The Ringing Starts Quietly
This kind of drift rarely shows up through "loud failure."
Instead, it starts as organizational white noise.
Tiny inconsistencies
Conflicting answers
Managers getting bypassed
Policies applied unevenly
People unsure who actually owns what
Little clues...easy to dismiss.
Like a ringing in your ear that's faint enough to ignore at first. Until one day you realize it’s been there the whole time... and now it won't give you a moment's peace.
By the time it's gotten this bad? The workaround is the system. It's just how things are done. You've got it baked into the culture (or rather, into the habits).
The Authority Collapse
This is where the real damage starts. Because eventually, supervisors stop being seen as the source of clarity. They become the actual obstacles to route around (yeah, this the point of "oh shoot, that's bad").
Now authority gets weird:
Reporting structures blur | Accountability softens | Internal politics creep in
And perhaps worst of all? Confusion starts shaping workplace culture.
People begin learning:
“The fastest path matters more than the correct one.”
That creates tension everywhere:
⁉️Who’s responsible?
🔇Whose answer counts?
😠Why did they get approval?
😫Why am I following process if nobody else has to?
"Oh bullocks," you say. And you would be right.
Exhaustion vs. Ego
Now look, I'm going to be super honest with you. The problem's you. (Captain goes down with the ship and all that jazz, yadda yadda).

But I get it: a lot of leadership teams see this happening and feel too overwhelmed to constantly reinforce the structure. That’s real.
Because in the short-term, fixing the routing issue often feels slower than just answering the question. So the shortcut survives... spreads... normalizes... ... ...
But sometimes? Sometimes, the workaround survives for entirely another reason.
Ego
You see... in some cases... in some workplaces...
Leadership quietly likes being the shortcut.
Not maliciously. Not in even necessarily in an egotistical, "I'm the best" kind of way.
Sometimes they genuinely want to be approachable. Available. Helpful.
The leader with the “open door” policy. (("Feel free to leave" 👈 Hey, I heard that!))
Either Way, Trust Erodes
Problem is, if every urgent issue routes around structure and lands directly on the person at the top, eventually people stop trusting the structure itself.

The Pressure Test
So here’s the real question:
When urgency appears, does your system tighten... or does it get bypassed?
Because if your structure only works when nobody’s under pressure... the heck have you built? Structure and systems and policies and all that... these are in place so the behaviors become automatic under pressure.
Not for the easy days. Not for the days when your team wants to bypass the process..!

Look, this isn’t about becoming rigid. And it’s not about punishing initiative or slowing people down, either.
Speed matters 🏎️
Responsiveness matters 👋
But when unofficial routing becomes the default operating model, the long-term costs compound quietly:
Authority weakens | Trust fragments | Confusion spreads | Culture drifts
And the really dangerous part?
The organization often still looks productive while it’s happening.
That’s why this issue survives so long: You don’t lose structure all at once. You lose it one “real quick” at a time.
