When Markets Wobble

Let’s talk about something nobody admits out loud. When markets wobble… founders wobble.

Not because they’re weak. Because they’re builders -- and builders hate standing still. Revenue flattens and suddenly you’re scanning the horizon like:

"What am I missing?" 

Everyone else seems to be moving:

Hiring
Launching
Expanding

(or at least they’re posting like they are *cough*)

And you? You’re staring at the same numbers wondering if you’ve already missed the window.

That’s not a spreadsheet problem. That’s identity pressure. And under identity pressure, people overcorrect. Human nature. And a trap.

 


What Overcorrection Looks Like

So you widen the ICP.  Because of course you do.

“Well maybe we’re just too narrow.”

You add initiatives.

“Let’s try this vertical.”
“Let’s launch this thing!”
“Let’s tweak the offer...”

You hire. You buy tools. You chase the AI angle.

Because doing something... feels safer than sitting still.

 


The Uncomfortable Question

Then creeps in the uncomfortable question:

If revenue froze tomorrow… would your first instinct be to cut -- or to clarify?

Would you immediately slash? Or instead would you ask:

"Where are we unclear?"
"Where have we been tapping the brakes?"
"Where are we diluted?"

Because in uncertain markets, the unforced error isn’t hesitation -- it’s overcorrection.

You swerve outa your lane to get out of the rut, avoid the next pothole... you get downright conservative and bearish or you try sometimes to do what the market's not doing and get bullish in your behavior.

Either way, the trap's right there facing you again.

 


Tighten, Don’t Add

So the thing is, most plateaus during tight cycles aren’t solved by adding weight. 
Instead, t
hey’re solved by tightening:

Tighter ICP.
Tighter pricing.
Tighter decision rights.
Tighter internal trust.
(real "summer-bod" mentality)

And hang on, because here’s the one most founders miss (I've seen it, but I've since avoided it -- so I want you to do the same):

When you get tense, your team feels it.

Communication shifts.
Autonomy shrinks.
Decisions route upward.
Momentum slows.

And then you think... the market is the problem.

Sometimes it is.
Sometimes it’s just internal drag magnified by pressure.

 


Where Discipline Shows Up

This is where discipline shows up.

Not flashy moves.
Not bold pivots.
Not “we’re going all in.”

Just clarity.

Clarity compounds.

Overcorrection burns cash.

And in uncertain times, cash burned on the wrong move is harder to recover than momentum lost to patience. There's nothing like liquidity to float your founder boat (and that lost momentum can leave ya dead in the water).

 


The Knockout Punch

So here’s the real separator:

In uncertain markets, the undisciplined operator asks,

“What should we add?”

The disciplined one asks,

“What deserves to survive?”
