# Retention: The Pedestrian Approach to UX

We've learned something most strategic advisors overlook (possibly because it takes a different mindset).  Here it is:  sometimes, the smartest way to evaluate a complicated experience is to be remarkably **pedestrian** about it.

Sounds counterintuitive, right?  We hear so much about getting that "20,000 foot view" and "stepping away so you can you see the big picture."  And that's true... but that's not the job of UX.

The term "pedestrian" comes from "walking" or "walkthrough," of course.  It's actually a pretty simple principle often taught in technical disciplines: slow down, follow the process, and examine what's actually happening.

No shortcuts. No assumptions. No skipping ahead because you already know how things *should* work.

At Thought Knockout, that philosophy sits at the heart of our approach to User eXperience (UX) evaluations.

And there's a reason for it:  it mimics the user experience precisely. Go figure. You see, your users don't experience your intentions.

**They experience what's actually there.**

## Take a Walk in Their Shoes 👟

Imagine reviewing your own organization's website.

You know the company. You understand its services. You know exactly where everything lives.

Congratulations! You're already biased..

Now imagine arriving as a *first-time visitor*.

🔎 Can you understand the offering?
🧭 Can you find what you're looking for?
🤔 Do the next steps make sense?
🚪 Where are you tempted to leave?

That's a true top-of-funnel (ToFu) UX evaluation.

And the same principle applies to educational consulting.

The curriculum might be perfectly organized from the instructor's perspective...
...but what happens when a learner encounters it for the first time?

*(Hint: more often than not, it breaks somewhere along the path).*

That's why you hire someone to QC work that wasn't theirs. The evaluator's job isn't to admire the architecture. It's to experience the journey (and get in there, identify friction-points, and break anything fragile).

## Be Pedestrian. Be Deliberate.

Here's where real UX evaluation requires more than a checklist. You need to get into the customer's seat.

Click the links.
     Read the instructions.
          Follow the prompts.
              Question the transitions.

And most importantly?

**Pay attention to what you're thinking along the way.**

That's freakin' valuable stuff:

   💭 "Wait...where am I supposed to go?"
💭 "Didn't they already explain this?"
💭 "Why am I being asked for that information?"
💭 "Was I supposed to *know* this already?"
              💭 "Okay, now I'm lost..."

Those reactions aren't distractions. They're findings. And they're precisely what reveals the friction points traditional reviews overlook.

It's another example of why [Churn Starts Earlier Than You Think](https://thoughtknockout.com/blog/retention-churn-starts-earlier-than-you-think). Users frequently encounter frustration long before they formally disengage.

## Turn the Walkthrough Into Intelligence 📋

Now, here's the catch:

A stream-of-consciousness evaluation can uncover remarkable insights. But handing leadership 47 pages of scattered observations?

"Not suitable for most audiences.."

The real skill is converting those observations into a **structured, actionable UX assessment**.

At Thought Knockout, that means pairing the user journey with clear navigation and executive-level priorities:

🚨 **Critical:** Friction that blocks progress, undermines trust, or threatens conversion.

⚠️ **Important:** Issues that create unnecessary effort, confusion, or appear inconsistent (even if they aren't, technically).

💡 **Also Consider:** Opportunities to improve clarity, engagement, or the overall experience.

 The observations tell the story.
The structure makes that story navigable.
                     The recommendations make it actionable.

It's the same diagnostic discipline behind a [Misdiagnosis (such as when sales isn't the problem](https://thoughtknockout.com/blog/when-sales-isnt-the-problem)): understand what's actually happening before prescribing a solution. Kind of the whole "clarity before commitment" theme you'll often see around here.

## The Pressure Test

So here's a question worth asking:

> *When was the last time someone evaluated your customer experience without already knowing how everything was supposed to work?*

Not a technical audit. And not a quick glance at analytics..

An actual walkthrough, from beginning to end, with the curiosity of a newcomer and the judgment of an experienced evaluator.

Because if you're only reviewing what your systems measure, you're missing a whole lot of what your customers (visitors, users, learners, potential clients..) actually experience.

## The Knockout Punch 🥊

Winning the funnel gets people through the door.
Winning the user experience gives them a reason to stay.

And whether you're guiding a prospective customer through a website or a learner through a course, the principle remains the same:

**Get in their seat. Follow their journey. Find the friction.**

Then turn what you discover into decisions that matter.

Often the most sophisticated way to evaluate the user experience...
...is to take a walk in their shoes. 👟
